Indira Viswanathan Peterson

Dr. Indira Viswanathan Peterson is Professor of Asian Studies, Emerita, at Mount Holyoke College, USA. She specializes in Sanskrit and Tamil literature, Hinduism, south Indian cultural history, music and dance, and European-Indian culture contact. Her publications include: Poems to Shiva: The Hymns of the Tamil Saints (1989) a translation of the bhakti poems of the Tamil Shaiva Nayanars; Arjuna and the Hunter (2016), a translation of the Sanskrit classical poem Kiratarjuniya of Bharavi; The Great Temple at Thanjavur: A Thousand Years (2010, with George Michell); and Performing Pasts: Reinventing the Arts in modern South India (2008, co-edited with Davesh Soneji).
