Sharmila Biswas is the Dance Director of late Rituparno Ghosh’s award winning film Chitrangada.
Sharmila Biswas is Graded as an ‘Outstanding’ artiste by The Indian Council of Cultural Relations, Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. Of India and ‘Top’ artists by Doordarshan, India.
She is the author of a textbook in Odissi dance, titled – Knowing Odissi. Recently, her biographical book ‘Offstage with Sharmila Biswas’, has been published by the National Indo Canadian Council, Canada.
Sharmila Biswas is the Recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Odishi Dance.
The Odissi Vision & Movement Centre – objectives & activities
Sharmila Biswas founded Odissi Vision & Movement (OVM) Centre in 1995. The aim was to deliver an integrated view of Odissi to young learners, professional dancers and the audience. The institution has 4 departments – Training, Performance, Study & Documentation, and, Design & Stagecraft. Through the works of these departments, creative young students are trained for career in different fields of Classical Dance.
OVM Repertory Unit is recognized as one of the foremost professional classical dance ensembles in India. It is known for innovative concepts and choreography in solo as well as group productions and has a consistent reputation for excellence in their presentations. Led by the Artistic Director Sharmila Biswas, OVM Repertory has performed in most of the important Festivals in India. OVM repertory has also toured USA, Countries in the South East Asia and Middle East.
